  4. Country Description:  Bahrain is an emirate, governed by the Al-Khalifa
  5. family in consultation with a Council of Ministers.  Islamic ideals and
  6. beliefs provide the conservative foundation of the country's customs, laws
  7. and practices.  Bahrain is a modern, developed country, and tourist
  8. facilities are widely available.

  10. Entry Requirements:  Passports and visas are required.  For further
  11. information on entry requirements, travelers can contact the Embassy of the

  17. Medical Facilities:  Basic modern medical care and medicines are available
  18. in several hospitals and health centers in Bahrain. Doctors and hospitals
  19. often expect immediate cash payment for health services.  U.S. medical
  20. insurance is not always valid outside the United States.  Supplemental
  21. medical insurance with specific overseas coverage has proven useful.  The
  22. Centers for Disease Controls' international travelers' hotline, telephone
  23. (404) 332-4559, has additional health information.

  25. Information on Crime:  Crime is generally not a problem for travelers in
  26. Bahrain.  The loss or theft of a U.S. passport abroad should be reported
  27. immediately to local police and the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
  28. Useful information on safeguarding valuables, protecting personal security,
  29. and other matters while traveling abroad is provided in the Department of
  30. State pamphlets, "A Safe Trip Abroad" and "Tips for Travelers to the Middle
  31. East and North Africa."  They are available from the Superintendent of
  32. Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402.

  34. Drug Penalties:  Travelers are subject to the laws and legal practices of
  35. the country in which they travel.  Penalties for possession, use or
  36. trafficking in illegal drugs are strict in Bahrain, and convicted offenders
  37. can expect jail sentences and fines.

  39. Registration:  U.S. citizens who register at the U.S. Embassy can obtain
  40. updated information on travel and security within Bahrain.
